The Next Step in Cameras

Comments

I have the S2 IS and an SLR, and let me tell you - there are days when I prefer my S2 IS. Many days. It's a great 'bridge' camera, and if you check out the S2 IS pool at Flickr, you'll see that the shots are generally clear, crisp, and almost as good as those shot with an SLR/kit lens combination.

I miss not having to fudge with lenses. I miss not being able to stuff a camera in my purse and take it everywhere. Most of all, I miss being inconspicuous - people cut you a lot of slack when they see you're shooting with a silver camera instead of something that looks big, black, and professional.

I tried selling my S2 IS a while back, but to be honest, I didn't try all that hard because I'd fallen in love with it by then.
Oh, and one more thing: image stabilization in camera. I know, some people will say that I need to learn to hold a camera steady and not rely on it, but the image stabilization feature in point & shoot/bridge cameras is enough of a reason for me to always keep one in my collection.
So what made you go to the SLR, Cecily? (I remember your posts about it - now I'm curious.)
I bought it because I was signing up for a photography class where the instructor said only SLR/dSLR cameras would be allowed. Imagine my surprise when I saw more than a few people in the course who had basic P&S cameras - not even ones where you can control aperture and shutter speed.

I also let myself get swayed by the myth that you had to have an SLR to do 'real' photography. Now I understand that it isn't the equipment, it's the skill of the photographer that really matters.
