My Very Own QotD: Push on Comments?

Here's a question for you. How many comments need to be in a blog or forum post before you start just thinking, "Ah, crap, that's too many comments"?

I'm curious about this, as I've had to deal with long comments on a lot of my own sites. And it's dawned on me that there isn't a really elegant way to kind of skim the cream off of those comments.

If I've got 87 comments on a thread, do I need to read all 87? Probably not. But maybe.

It depends on the blog. Some blogs have grat comments, others don't. I almost always read all the comments on BFB. Another one with great comments is Making Light--often the comments there are more interesting than the posts. I'm really bad at commenting, though. I'm trying to be better, but it's an uphill climb, since my preferred mode is "lurk".

Hmmm my sex blog has 293 comments for one entry alone so I'd say that is just way too many.

Well, a sex blog getting a lot of comments does make sense. People love it. :)

I'm very curious how people distill the "good" from the "bad". Do you use blogs where you can mark posts as favorites? Or whittle down based on ratings?

I know that for me, on Slashdot (a rare read now), I just go for the highest rating level with 20 comments or less. And if a blog or forum offers "favorite" threads, particularly ones I've participated in, I use that too.

Actually I don't know I started the blogs 3 months ago and still learning the properties of it.
